My focus is to create movement using color and repetition using the theme of carnival rides as inspiration. My work overflows with black and white shapes to create a simplistic, yet free-form sculpture. I created multiple small pieces of one same shape that will connect to form one large piece. The repetition of different shapes is utilized and successfully portrays excitement of being at a carnival. The Carnival is an event at which people release their stress and enjoy amusement rides. At a carnival, people get excited and pumped up. In the streets, people dance and party. Carnivals are very colorful, which adds to our excitement. To emphasize the amusement rides, I created works that exhibit strong movement, balance, and unity such as the ones in rollercoaster rides. I was inspired by my own personal experiences at amusement parks and carnivals, as well as images of rollercoaster’s online. Christo and Romauld Hazoume use materials such as silk to express an engagement of space. They use negative space in the same way that I do. The point of the design is to try to use width, depth, and height, to achieve an expression of movement and color. The engagement of space is used to emphasize unity and balance. For image #1, I focused on repetition, balance and space. For image #3 was focused in height and width and depth. For image #6, I used different colors to express the setting of a oceanic view and imagine an animal rising out from it. My artwork not only became a single movement, but also became several different movements and shapes, using different angles to portray the movement. My idea is to allow people to feel the excitement of carnivals through the lens of my work.
